| A Need That Continues | ||
| It is hard to believe that 2000 years have passed since Jesus’ disciples asked him to teach them how to pray. Nothing has really changed! We all feel the same need that the disciples had to improve their prayers and prayer life. All too often we approach prayer as a quick fix to an unmanageable situation. | ||
| • We are busy and we rush to offer a few quick prayers hoping to bring God into the occasion so that everything will be okay. | ||
| • We seem to find time to petition our father only when we are in trouble. Regardless of our skills or lack of skills in prayer we will not become a great people unless we make the word of God our foundation. We need to emulate and learn from the model prayer: | ||
| "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen." Matthew 6:9-13 | ||
| The Purpose & Power of Prayer | ||
| The purpose and power of prayer is multifaceted, like a cut diamond that has many sides. | ||
| • Through our prayers the Lord can affect: | ||
| • The prohibition of gambling | ||
| • The gospel to a lost world | ||
| • Our neighbor next door | ||
| • The righteousness of our nation | ||
| • The decisions of our president | ||
| • Those that are sick and bereaved | ||
| • The decisions for our State/City | ||
| • One’s spouse or children | ||
| • The homeless and poor | ||
| • Through prayer we can co-labor with each other and with God, making eternal differences in our march to that eternal reward. | ||
| • Through prayer we can care and share the blessings of Christ. | ||
| • Through prayer we will be assisted in our devotion and desire to be holy. | ||
| • Through prayer we have the means for forgiveness of sins. | ||
| • Through prayer we can give God the victory in our life. | ||
| God is waiting and listening for his people to pray, and he cherishes words from the lips of a holy people: "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayers; . . ." I Peter 3:12 | ||
| Finding Time To Pray | ||
|
Jesus got away often to pray, and if he needed to pray
do we not that much more need to pray. His day was
filled from morning to night with many pressures and
responsibilities, addressing crowds, healing the sick,
granting private interviews, traveling, and training his
disciples. He was extremely busy, but he found time to
pray and he made praying a top priority. Every day we should privately pray to God, but there are times when we need the security and refuge that comes when like-minded brethren assemble for special prayer. There are events and situations that are of public interest and knowledge that should be brought to the attention of many. |
||
| Our Spiritual Struggle | ||
| We need to pray because
we are in a spiritual battle. Our struggle is "not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places." Ephesians 6:12 In order to win we need the providential favor and power of an omnipotent God. This spiritual battle involves our soul’s eternal destiny. What a fearful thought! • We should fight Satan and his forces through our prayers and petitions to God our heavenly father. • We should make prayer a long-term commitment to accomplish the work God has called us to do. |
