Minor in Family and Consumer Science
Family and Consumer Science is a multidisciplinary field of study with a focus on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities in support of life-long learning, informed citizenship, and future employment. Specifically, graduates with a Minor in Family and Consumer Science will be able to make sound decisions that promote sustainable relationships, prosperous families, and healthy habits.
Key areas of focus include Lifespan Development, Interpersonal Dynamics, Family Systems, Resource Management, Health and Wellness, Personal Finance, Decision Making, and Environmental Sustainability. Interested undergraduate students will take one course from each of the following areas for a total of 20 credit hours with a C- or better in each course.
Upon completion of the Minor in Family and Consumer Science, the graduate will be able to:
- Understand lifespan development, interpersonal dynamics, and family systems. (Area I: Lifespan Development)
- Make informed purchasing decisions, evaluate products and services, navigate the complexities of the digital marketplace, and appropriately allocate resources. (Area II: Consumer Decision Making/ Resource Management)
- Understand the science of food, nutrition, responsible consumption patterns, and sustainable living practices. (Area III: Health/Wellness and the Environment)
Applications for admission to the Minor in Family and Consumer Science
- There is no admissions process required for a Minor in Family and Consumer Science for currently enrolled undergraduate students in good standing at Amridge University.
Interested students would need to contact their advisor to consider scheduling the appropriate courses for the Minor during the registration period.
Time Normally Required to Complete the Program
The Minor in Family and Consumer Science may be completed in 2 semesters. A student may take courses on a part-time or full-time basis.
Required Courses for the Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences
The Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences consists of program specific courses from three areas. Three courses will be selected from AREA I (12 Credit hours), one course from AREA II (4 Credit Hours), and one course from AREA III (4 Credit Hours) for a total of 20 Credit Hours.
Graduation Requirements for the Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences
In order to graduate with the Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences, a student must satisfy the following requirements:
- Complete a total of 20 undergraduate semester hours of the required coursework to specification;
- All of the 20 undergraduate semester credit hours must be from Amridge University;
- Have a cumulative grade point average of C- or higher in each of the courses used for the minor; and
Complete an Amridge University Degree Completion Application available from the University’s MyAmridge Portal. The properly completed and signed application must be submitted after the completion of 9 graduate credit hours. Following this schedule permits the University to conduct a full audit of the respective student’s records to make sure that all courses, programs, and respective graduation requirements have been met. Students having any questions regarding the Degree Completion Application should contact the Registrar’s Office.
